San Francisco, Episcopal church et al
Very good
This archive, contained in a mid-19th century metal box labeled Papers and Letters of Rev, Dan Lewis, includes correspondence, photographs and ephemera related to San Francisco's Grace Cathedral and the Second Bishop of California Rev. William Ford Nichols. Correspondence ranges from the 1870's into the early 20th century. Included is a CDV photograph of Rev. Kip, the first Bishop of California.
Nichols (1849-1924) was ordained deacon on June 4, 1873 and priest on June 4, 1874, at Holy Trinity Church in Middletown, Connecticut. Following 3 years (1887-1890) as rector of St. James Church in Philadelphia he was elected Coadjutor Bishop of California. Upon the death of Bishop Kip in 1893 he was appointed diocesan Bishop at Grace Episcopal Church San Francisco.
