Recto with 2 4-line staves, the remainder of the text printed without musical notations; gutter (less so) and bottom margin toned, with some loss and fraying to the bottom margin, "Ash Wednesday" noted in pencil in the upper margin of recto. From the private collection of Santa Cruz paper-maker Peter Thomas. TP224-007. Very Good.
Antiphonals were books containing the sung portions of the Divine Office. There were generally quite large so they could be shared by a choir. The headline of this text is printed in French, but the words to be sung or chanted are in Latin, including a section "Multiplicati sunt super capillos capitis mei, qui oderunt me gratis." which translated to English is "Those who hate me without reason are more numerous than the hairs of my head." A text from Psalm 69, verse 4. There is no discernible watermark in this paper.
