This leaf is an extract from an unidentified book about British artists and authors. This leaf lists the works of Sarah Trimmer's (1741-1810) publications. The unknown volume is a typical nineteenth-century British production highlighting the work of important artists and authors, along with high-quality reproductions of art works. In this case the Whatman paper contains a "JWhatman, 1811" water-mark in the lower margin. The English company "Vintage Paper Co." remarks that "Over the years Vintage Paper Co has had the good fortune to handle paper from many manufactures, both historical and contemporary and there is absolutely no doubt that J Whatman consistently produced the finest quality paper we have ever seen. This is the reason we are in love with Whatman paper - it's the best paper ever made."
Wikipedia remarks: "James Whatman (1702-1759), the Elder, was a paper maker, born in Kent, who made revolutionary advances to the craft in England. He is noted as the inventor of wove paper (or Vélin), an innovation used for high-quality art and printing. The techniques continued to be developed by his son, James Whatman the Younger (1741-1798). At a time when the craft was based in smaller paper mills, his innovations led to the large scale and widespread industrialization of paper manufacturing."
PROVENANCE: This sheet of paper was collected by Santa Cruz, CA papermaker and book artist, Peter Thomas.
