Item Details

Letter Sheet dated Richmond. March 6th, 1853. Signed in type by B. McCandlish, Jr. (Adopted son?), announcing the death of Rev. Stephen Taylor.  Taylor was one of a number of prominent Richmond men who signed their names  to a petition in 1852 to commute the death sentence of local enslaved young man Jordan Hatcher. Hatcher was hired out by his owner and he hit his employer with iron bar while being whipped.  An interesting association piece.   A few small pin pricks else in good condition.
