Scarce anthology of articles, essays, poetry, and plays from some of the most important writers and activists in the Black Arts Movement. 

Amiri Baraka (previously known as LeRoi Jones) founded Jihad Productions to promote Black literature and music. The anthology contains several poems under Jones's name, as well as works by Sonia Sanchez, Larry Neal, David Henderson, Edward S. Spriggs, Ben Caldwell, Q.R. Hand, and Joseph White. Introduction by the playwright and actor Yusef Iman. Cover by Bnjn.

This copy is a third printing and is scarce in the antiquarian book trade. The anthology originally was published in 1966 as Afro-American Festival of the Arts Magazine followed by a second printing in 1967. The first two printings are nearly impossible to find outside of university special collections.

PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 217 x 140 mm), [52] pages, in stapled, decorated wrappers (soft cover).

CONDITION: Faint soiling and creasing to rear wrapper, bumping to corners, slight rusting to staples, but otherwise clean and unmarked. Easily Very Good or better.

Shipping and Returns

All books are offered subject to prior sale. We attempt to describe any defects we see and to note the presence of bookplates and previous owners' signatures. We unconditionally guarantee the authenticity of author signatures and inscriptions.


All items may be returned within 15 days of receipt and must be in the same condition as originally shipped. Please notify us before returning a book.


We accept all major credit cards issued in the U.S. as well as PayPal. (For clients outside the U.S., we strongly prefer PayPal.) We also accept checks drawn on U.S. banks from customers known to us. Shipments to New Jersey addresses will be charged 6.625% sales tax unless the buyer is tax-exempt.


We gladly offer deferred billing to libraries or other institutions.


We ship books through the U.S. Postal Service. If you would like us to use another carrier, please let us know. Within the U.S. we offer shipping by USPS Media Mail for $7 for the first book and $3 for each additional book. USPS Priority Mail is $15 for the first book and $4 for each additional item. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 pounds, or 1 kilo. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.


Orders from outside the U.S. will be billed at cost, but will likely be at least $30 and possibly more, depending on the location.


Important note to buyers outside the U.S.: Any customs duties, taxes, or fees are the responsibility of the buyer. On customs forms, we declare the full value of the shipment.
