San Francisco, [San Francisco Poster Brigade], 1982, Soft cover
Near Fine
A collection of striking visual material to promote the Internationalist Arts Festival in San Francisco in May 1982. The city was the final stop of a large traveling exhibition that featured radical political works submitted from around the world.
Besides mail art, the festival included dance, film, video, music, theatre, and poetry readings; contributions poured in from 46 countries. The month-long San Franciso finale also featured paintings, sculpture, and installations by artists from the Bay Area.
The touring exhibition was organized by the San Francisco Poster Brigade, which was formerly known as the Wilfred Owen Brigade (after a radical poet killed in World War I.) The show opened in San Francisco in October 1980 and traveled to Los Angeles, Tucson, and New York before returning to San Francisco in May 1982, finishing up at the Southern Exposure Gallery.
