St. Joseph, Missouri, n.p., 1906, Card
First Edition, Very Good
Eighty-eight hand drawn postcards, rendered in pen, ink, colored pencil and watercolor. With postmarks from 1906-1913, all cards are addressed to M. J. [Maurice Jenne] Heerlein, Esq. 1507 S Tenth Street St. Joseph Missouri. Each features an original, rather fleshed out illustration, signed "Bill". With a detailed hand and playful, sharp wit, the author and artist depicts family, townspeople and characters in the senders life as well as stereotypes of the time, primarily Native Americans, cowboys and "western' life as well as references to the post office, Sugar Lake and 'Sterling Splits". (Recipient Heerlein was the owner of Sterling Pickling Works, manufacturers of pickles, vinegars and sauerkraut.) The artist's social and cultural commentary are represented through caricatures, text and punny slogans. (30604)
