2 Graphic Broadsides Showing Anti-Chinese activist Denis Kearney Behind Bars House of Correction Kearney being tormented by a group of Chinese men holding torn sock , cigars , A fish labeled Black Friday, etc. following his arrest for inciting a riot. The Chinese Must Go! was the slogan of the Working Mans Party of California. On July 24 1877 at one of the parties rallies ,Denis Kearney incited a riot. Party men gathered for a demonstration on Mission Street at the United States Mint , near the Woolen Mills , a major Chinese employer. The next evening a crowd gathered at the Pacific Mail Steamers Dock , where Chinese workers arrived from Asia. The demonstrators set fire to a lumber yard and attacked the firefighters. Police shot four rioters dead.
