The Border Canary was once nicknamed the "Wee Gem" because of it's small compact size but, ironically is now one of the largest canary birds. These canaries get their name from their place of origin...the border area between Scotland and England. Also known as the Border Fancy, details of this canary's origins are somewhat mysterious...no one knows for sure exactly when this breed of canary bird began to develop. It became popular as the "Wee Gem" by the mid-1800s and was officially named "Border Fancy Canary" on July 5, 1890.
Border Canary Show Standards: Border Fancy Canaries are judged on qualities like type, feather quality, and position. Ideally, they should be clean-cut, compact, close-feathered, and proportional, showing no tendency towards heaviness or roughness. Their ideal length is considered to be 152 mm (approximately 6 inches). Judges look for features such as a well-filled, rounded back, a neat, round head in proportion with the body, compact wings, fine legs showing little thigh, and a neatly drawn, packed, narrow tail. Rich, soft, and pure ground color, free from the effects of color feeding, is also a key factor.
