Begun in 1906 Paris by New York Herald owner James Gordon Bennett, the Bennett Cup is not only the oldest international gas balloon race but held as the most prestigious even today.

 

The challenge was to fly the furthest distance from the start point. In the year of this race (October 17th, 1910 launch) the winners were Alan Ramsey Hawley & Augustus Post who landed a week later (having been presumed lost) in Quebec.

 

Balloons filling at the gasometer, some wide field views, balloon ascents & remarkable mechanic and basket ascent shots. Period photographer notes identify American balloons Peoria & Missouri. Advertising balloons including Budweiser can also be seen on the field. More notes identify French & German balloons.
