Item Details

Introduction outlays the function of the Royal Italian Remount Commission headed up by Baron Robbiate. Gives founding date as April 1st, 1916 and this text last references 1917.  Special attention is given to the care of the horses during their stay (health screenings, hospitals, ample freedom, etc) with the claim that mortalities during European transit had dropped 80% under Leprestre, Miller & Co. care.

Documenting that firm in Goshen New York, comprehensively. Includes documentation of the executives, trained staff & veterinarians; living & office quarters ; horse paddocks ; hospitals ; grain & water storage ; light cavalry, heavy cavalry & artillery horses as well as pack mules ; a series of photos on the “cowboys” in charge of the horses. Campus shots for context including two panoramas and a platt map inside back cover. This is not see in archives anywhere and may have been an internal publication. Exceedingly rare.

9.5 x 11.25” soft binding w/ war illustration front paper cover. (40) 9.5 x 11.25” photographs as titled below are linen backed. Half a dozen exhibit edge chipping & one has a stabilized tear at right edge. Noted in the list.

Edited & Compiled by Samuel Tauber // 229 West 109 St. // New York with English & Italian text on each page. (2) Double page panoramas at rear (Southern & Northern views) with platt map just inside back cover. That map & cover have isolated insect damage.

Front paper cover is entirely detached as are perhaps a dozen pages, others are hanging by a literal thread to simple sewn binding. Water spots to the paper covers. Appears complete, sequential and with no obvious loss — though again there is no way to confirm as I can find a comparable.

Exceptional WWI remounting reference. Possibly otherwise unpublished.
