First edition. A fine copy.
This companion volume to Gravell and Miller's A Catalogue of American Watermarks, 1690-1835 presents 788 watermarks from foreign-made paper actually used in America. It is important to note that until 1775 most fine paper used by Americans was imported from Europe, indeed foreign-made paper was preferred until the mid-1800's. Thus, this book is essential for the study of American historical manuscripts. A new, distortion-free technique, developed by Gravell, was used to accurately reproduce the watermarks photographically. Each watermark is photographed with a scale-size indicator. Watermarks can be important in establishing approximate dates for undated manuscripts; Gravell and Miller show that approximately 95% of the paper they examined was used within six years of the date of manufacture. Two appendices concern a rare surviving Excise List of English paper manufacturers from 1816 which is here published for the first time. The book is indexed by watermark subject, proper name, and papermill.
