First edition. An early inscription, M. A. Petrie, at top of engraved title-page. The bindings are in near fine condition. The plates with irregular light foxing. An excellent set.
Volume 1 with frontispiece portrait, engraved title-page drawn by William Marshall Craig (1788-1828), folding engraved map of Spain, and six engraved plates. Volume 2 with 10 plates. Several are adapted from Charles Antoine Coypel's 1746 series. Most are engraved by B. Lane, others by Mackenzies, Burke, and H. R. Cooke. A few have guard sheets. A contemporary binding, smooth black leather sprinkled with green. Covers with outer gilt double fillets boxing a Greek-key roll. In the centers a one-line panel with rococo ornaments at the corners. Smooth spine in six panels, the second and fourth in red with title and volume numbers, the others decorated in gilt. Cover edges with gilt fillet, turn-ins with decorative roll. Marbled endpapers, text edges marbled. The binder is unidentified, but the style is very similar to work by Christian Kalthoeber who worked in London, perhaps after he had joined Caumont's bindery in 1808.
