Item Details

Los Angeles: Sierra Club Ski Mountaineers and Rock Climbers, 1938-83. Approximately 208 issues and a few membership lists and ephemeral items. Generally mimeo'd or later xeroxed on 13.5x8.5" sheets, although some issues smaller, between 2 and 8pp, and either single sheet or stapled at corners. Vignette illustrations. Toning, expected wear, occasional edge tears. Very good.

Substantial run of this historic mountaineering newsletter with a funny name that serves as the official publication for two Southern California outdoor groups: The Ski Mountaineers and Rock Climbers of the Sierra Club, Angeles chapter.  This collection comes from the library of Arthur Bradford Johnson (1906-1984), a pioneering California rock climber, civil engineer, and conservationist who served as the first chairman of the Sierra Club's Angeles Chapter Rock Climbing Section (1934–1937).  He made numerous first ascents in the Sierra Nevada and conducted early experiments in climbing equipment and safety.

First published in January 1938, The Mugelnoos was founded and initially edited by Glen Dawson of Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles, and named by pioneering California climber Robert K. Brinton.  Ruth Dyar Mendenhall took over as editor with issue no. 7, continuing in that role for some forty years.  It was the very first first chapter or section newsletter published by the Sierra Club, and documented the development of rock climbing and ski mountaineering in Southern California and the Sierra Nevada, with reports of climbs and first ascents, discussions of equipment and technique, club activities, and news of the region's climbing community.

This run spans the years 1938–1983, including five issues from the publication's inaugural year and substantial runs from the 1940s and early 1950s, the formative period of the sport in the region.  Also included are several membership lists from the 1940s.
