“Vaska the Cat”!

Image = 7.25 x 9.0 inches; Sheet = 9.25 x 12.375; printed by lithography on hand-colored laid paper; deckles on two edges; very clean with only the faintest even toning.

Part of a series of satirical and caricature Lubok (plural: Lubki) prints, in this case mostly propaganda related to Russia’s 1914 war with the German Empire. Some prints in the series depict historical figures and designs. These prints were produced around 1914, just prior to the Russian Revolution of 1917.

“Vaska the Cat” (aka, “The Cat of Kazan”) is depicted here as the Prussian (German) enemy of Russia.

“Vaska the Cat” is one of the most famous traditional characters in Russian folklore, more typically shown in 18-19th c. lubki as a large happy cat with a humorous inscription.

Price includes USPS Priority postage to addresses in contiguous 48 states. Cost of postage to be added for all others.
