Maruo's unmistakable visual world combines beauty and grotesque imagery, eroticism, horror, decadence, dreamlike atmosphere and references to early Showa-period Japanese popular culture.
This collection brings together three works from different periods of his career:
1. Shojo Tsubaki – Revised Edition
(Midori / Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show)
One of Suehiro Maruo's best-known works and an important example of his characteristic mixture of grotesque fantasy, eroticism, cruelty and highly refined drawing. This is the revised edition published by Seirinkogeisha. The revised edition was first issued on October 24, 2003. This copy is the 32nd printing, issued on September 1, 2011.
2. DDT – Boku, Miminashi Hoichi desu
An early collection by Maruo, published by Seirindo.
Originally published on November 25, 1983. This copy is the fifth printing, issued on June 15, 1988.
The book represents Maruo's early underground period and contains the strange, theatrical and provocative imagery that established his highly individual visual language.
3. Inugami Hakase
A later work showing Maruo's distinctive combination of mystery, horror, grotesque fantasy and highly decorative manga illustration.
Published by Akita Shoten. First published on September 25, 1994. This copy is the 13th printing, issued on March 15, 2008.
Together, the three books provide an attractive overview of Suehiro Maruo's distinctive universe, from his early underground work to one of his internationally best-known titles and his later narrative manga.
Maruo's work occupies a unique position between manga, illustration, Japanese underground culture and the tradition of ero-guro. His highly controlled drawing style creates a striking contrast between visual beauty and disturbing subject matter.
