from the Preface:  In anticipation of the opening of the new Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, the Louvre is pleased to host a selection of masterpieces from the magnificent collection assembled by the State of Qatar. It spans the art of the entire Islamic world, “from Córdoba to Samarkand,” across time and space. The exhibition is complemented by a presentation of the architectural design conceived by I. M. Pei and the museum layout designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte—two architects whose names are inextricably linked to the Grand Louvre project. It demonstrates the artistic vitality of a country that has deliberately emphasized culture and the dissemination of knowledge, notably through its commitment to building several museums. This event is part of the plan to relocate the Louvre’s Islamic art collection to the vast spaces that will be built in the Visconti Courtyard, in order to better showcase its richness and diversity. The establishment of the new Department of Islamic Art at the very heart of our museum reflects our commitment to helping our millions of visitors better understand the artistic heritage of Islamic civilization and its centuries-old connections with the other cultures represented at the Louvre. The presentation of the Doha collection and the museum that will soon house it marks the beginning of what we hope will be an enriching collaboration and exchange between our bicentennial museum and this very young and promising institution. Henri Loyrette – President and Director of the Louvre Museum
