London, printed by the Lithographic printers to the Crown, Day & Son, 1864. Large folio measuring 12 x 17 inches (30x42cm), all page edges gilded. With a total of 28 plates, comprising the decorated title-page, the 26 letters of the alphabet and a final plate of numerals (both Roman and Arabic).
Rightly celebrated as a bold masterpiece of mid-nineteenth century chromo-lithographic printing, with expert use of gold and silver pigments to great effect.
Condition: small library stamp on most plates; marks affecting the title-page and first six plates. Rebound yellow and blue cloth. Internally very good.
