From Seutter's, Atlas novus, after 1742, engraver C. Lotter, 23 x 19.6 inches (58.5cm x 50,0cm). Copper engraving, hand colored.
Seutter’s second map of Japan, based here on E. Kaempfer, featuring his portrait in the title cartouche. The map was published after 1742 exclusively under the printing privilege granted by Imperial Vice-Chancellor Fr. C. von Schönborn in the years 1740–42.
At top left is a sumptuous title cartouche in Rococo style frame surrounded with a large cartouche with Japanese and Europeans, one holding a copy of the same map. At the lower right are a number of Japanese designs including 'Monnoyes Japonnaises Dor et Argent' and 'Armes des Princes Japonnois'.
Condition: In very good condition, with center fold as issued, plus one additional fold.
