Very good.
Fort Stotsenburg, Pampanga Province, Luzon Philippines was the location for a United States Army camp. The Third Cavalry Regiment was sent to the Philippines after the Spanish-American War to help quell the Philippine Insurrection.
Offering a 4 pp, ALS, from Arthur Bird to his mother, Mrs. George P. Bird of Wetang, Ill, (cover included with original postage and a bold postmark). No date, but the postmark designates Oct. 24, 1906, as the mailing date. Bird was likely there as part of a peacekeeping force.
“...I have never had the fever but once since I landed here. I did not have a very hard attack of it, only lasted several days...
“From all accounts, the 3rd Cavalry is good for a two-year stay in these remote islands.
“Stotsenburg has excellent drinking water. So it is wholly unnecessary for us to boil it. It is bad that Ward’s horse is inclined to destroy everything she is hitched to.
“I am glad papa intends to keep the horses. Of course they are getting well advanced in years, but it would be a shame to sell them to someone who would work them to death. Keep them for what they have done.
“I think it is wrong for anyone to sell a horse just because they are getting old. But in many cases it is true, most people sell them, never thinking of the many services they rendered in their prime.
“Fred Elmore is angry at me for not doing as he wanted...At least I have never heard from him since I wrote. I told him in a very few words that I wanted to have nothing to do with the mater whatever. I have trouble of my own. I don’t care to foot someone else’s trouble on my shoulders.... Affectionately, Arthur
Folds and light toning. Overall excellent.
