Excellent.
False reports of a mutiny with the captain being killed on board the schooner Herny S. Woodruff of Lamoine were false according to the New York Times. [Research included] However, the false story, which was reported in a dispatch to Boston newspapers led a company to assume the worst in the letter offered here.
1 ½ pp, 5 ½ x 8 ½, ALS, F. Woodruff & Co., New York, regarding a mutiny on a schooner August 1886, to F.D. Hodgkins & Sons of Lamoine, Maine.
“Yours 10th to hand, which is a great relief as our morning papers gave a vivid account of a mutiny on board the Harry Woodruff. Several killed & Capt. locked in cabin. Vessel probably run ashore or sunk...
“Glad she has got full fare & will get the most money out of them. Are you going to discharge her right away & if so what are you going to do with the vessel. We think she can come here & run to East Indies profitably. Let us keep her to work.
“Yours truly
“F. Woodruff & Co.”
The Times report said that the “account of a mutiny on board the schooner Henry S. Woodruff of Lamoine on the Grand Banks and of the stranding of the vessel on Cape Race is wholly false...She has not been to the Grand Banks, but caught a fare on the Quereau Bank and has arrived at Lamoine all right, bringing 4,500 quintals, which is said to be the largest load of codfish ever brought into the United States.”
Letter is in excellent condition with two pin holes and one small tear repaired with archival tape. Cover is included
