Item Details

Very good.

SAMUEL E. SMITH (March 12, 1788 – March 4, 1860) was the tenth governor of Maine, elected in 1831. Smith was admitted to the Bar in 1812 and practed law in Wiscasset, Maine. He graduated from Harvard in 1808. He served in several judicial positions and as representatives in the Legislatures of Massachusetts and Maine.

In this one page, 8 x 9 ¾, ALS, Wiscasset, Maine, Smith writes to his brother Joseph, an attorney in Boston, on September 1, 1812, regarding creditors of a local firm.

“...While in Boston, I was informed by Mr. Johnson that he had considerable accounts against Briggs & Anderson of this town & probably if they are not more fortunate than the creditors of those persons in general, their accounts are yet undischarged. This is then to request you to inform Messrs. Johnson & Marsh that Briggs & Anderson yesterday shut up their store & have since had all their property that could be found attached. It is thought that there is more than sufficient to answer all the attachments at preent upon it as but one of their creditors in Boston, Mr. B & N. Tucker have made any attachment but many of them will be informed of their situation by the present mail...”

Letter is in very good condition. Seal remnant bleed through. Integral address leaf. Bold Wiscasset, Maine, postmark.
