ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822-1885). After leading the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War, Grant became the Eighteenth President of the United States, serving from 1869 to 1877.
One page, 12 x 16 Document signed by Grant December 14, 1875. Washington. A printed Post Office commission signed “U S Grant” as President and “Marshall Jewell” as Postmaster General. Grant appointed M.S. Parker as the Postmaster of New Orleans.
As commanding general, Grant led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War. Historians typically dismiss Grant as weak and ineffective and have ranked his presidency at near the bottom in American history.
Jewell (October 20, 1825 – February 10, 1883) was a manufacturer, pioneer telegrapher, telephone entrepreneur who served as the 44th and 46th Governor of Connecticut, the U.S. Minister to Russia and the 25th United States Postmaster. As postmaster general, Jewell made reforms and was intent on cleaning up the postal service from internal corruption and profiteering. He helped Secretary of the Treasury Benjamin H. Bristow shut down and prosecute the Whiskey Ring. President Grant, however, became suspicious of Jewell’s loyalty after Jewell fired a Boston postmaster over non- payment of a surety bond and asked for his resignation.
The document has condition issues due to margin chipping and flaking and is totally encapsulated. It is in fair to good condition. Both the Grant and the Jewell autographs are dark.
