Very good.
The Connecticut Continental Troops, Second Regiment, was raised on the first call for troops by the Legislature during April and May of 1775. The companies marched to camps around Boston and took part at Roxbury serving during the siege until expiration of their term of service in December 1775. Detachments of officers and men were engaged in the Battle of Bunker Hill and in Benedict Arnold’s Quebec Expedition. The regiment was re-organized for service in 1776 under Col. Wyllys.
In the two very fine documents offered here, both war-date, SAMUEL STODDARD of Canterbury, who was in Col. Wylliys’ regiment, is seeking his pay first with a request to the Committee Of Pay Table, 6 x 8 ½, in which he states: “Please to deliver to the Bearer Ebez. Felch, the Treasurer, Notes due to me on Account of Depreciation of the Money due to me for my Wages and Service in Col. Samuel Wyllys’s Regiment in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army before the first day of January last. Canterbury, August 28th, 1780 – Samuel Stoddard...”
In the second document, 2 ½ x 6, the Canterbury selectmen “certify whom it may concern that Samuel Stoddard...enlisted and served in the Connecticut Line of the Cont’l Army in Col. Wyllys regt...”
Noting Stoddard’s dates of service, it appears he would not have served in the Siege of Boston, which occurred in the spring of 1775.
Wyllys served in the Siege of Boston until the British evacuation on March 17 and then marched with George Washington to New York. He saw action in the Battle of Long Island and served in the New York vicinity until the end of the year. From 1777 to 1781, Wyllys commanded the 3rd Connecticut Regiment serving under General Samuel Holden Parsons. His regiment served in the New York area throughout the remainder of its service.
