Bemelmans is best known as author and illustrator of the Madeline books, first appearing in 1939. Four books were published while he was alive. His murals decorate the Carlyle Hotel's famous Bemelmans Bar in Manhattan. He was also an illustrator for "The New Yorker" and" Town and Country" magazines.
Bemelmans has drawn a sketch of an 18th century styled waiter holding a roasted fowl. Two smiling girls appear in the background. The drawing on unevenly cut sketch paper measures approximately 5 x 8 1/4/ and is rendered in gouache and ink, which Bemelmans typically used. He has signed in pencil near the waiter's feet. Docketed in pencil on verso, "Prelim sketch for illustration by Bemelmans" and another pencil notation in the opposite corner upside down, "Willys off..."
