[Hawaiiana] CDV's of Queen Emma and Hanniakamalama circa 1860's
Two CDV's from the early 1860's featuring Queen Emma plus her country home of Hanniakamalama. Fair condition only. Both photos are faded and are losing fine details. Queen Emma has 1/2-inch tear and albumen print is peeling from card along one edge. Both mounts are somewhat soiled and worn. Both cards have manuscript writing on verso; one in pen, one in pencil. Verso is also soiled.
Rare images of Queen Emma of Hawaii and her country home Hanniakamalama. Emma Kalanikaumakaʻamano Kaleleonālani Naʻea Rooke (1836 – 1885) married Kamehameha IV in 1856 and served as queen of Hawaii from 1856 to his death in 1863. She did not ascend to the throne as King Kalākaua was elected instead.
The manuscript on the verso of the photo of Hanniakamalama is written in first person but we have our doubts as to whether she actually wrote this. However, the photo arrived with envelope which states "copy belonging to Queen Emma". The photographer, Menzies Dickson later purchased the famous studio of Henry L. Chase in Honolulu.
