Printed and manuscript Tally List for election held September 6th, 1865, in Mono County, California. Document on blue paper measuring 17 x 13 3/4 inches with horizontal lines in pencil. Verso is blank. Multiple folds. Several pin-holes along middle fold. Very good condition.

According to Wikipedia: "Mono County was formed in 1861 from parts of Calaveras, Fresno, and Mariposa Counties. A portion of northern Mono County contributed to the formation of Alpine County in 1864; parts of the county's territory were given to Inyo County in 1866.

Between its initial formation in 1861 until 1864, the county seat was Aurora, Nevada, assumed to be in California, with the state line being undetermined. The courts of the county and other county functions occurred there in those years until the California Legislature enacted a new statute removing the county seat to Bridgeport in 1864."

By 1865 the County Seat dispute apparently had been settled with Bridgeport now the county seat of Mono County. A previous owner of this document had written "Aurora" in pencil in upper right-hand corner--perhaps hoping this document was from that disputed 4-year period of Aurora being the county seat for both California and Nevada counties. 

Nonetheless, this is an early Mono County document tallying votes for state senate, assemblyman, plus county offices for sheriff, county clerk, treasurer, assessor, coroner, surveyor and district attorney. The election also covered Superintendent for Public Instruction, Supervisor and Constable.
