- First edition. “The following catalog documents an exhibition of correspondence art entitled Lightworks Envelope Show. It was originally presented to the public in July 1978 at the Ann Arbor Public Library and was the first correspondence art exhibition in the State of Michigan. The show was reinstalled in Detroit in May 1979 with the assistance of the Artist Guild of Detroit.
In documenting this exhibition, we present two articles on the history and context of correspondence art. The first, "Notes on Correspondence Art" is by Ken Friedman. Friedman, who acted as director of Fluxus West since 1966, is an acknowledged pioneer of correspondence or mail art as well as the art form's leading spokesman and critic. The second article by Mike Crane presents excepts from his forthcoming book, A Brief History of Correspondence Art. Crane's work is the first of its kind, providing far-ranging overviews based on sociological surveys among past and present practitioners of correspondence art….’ (Preface)
