Item Details

An interesting group of documents and letters dealing with a slave named Tom from South Carolina.  Tom worked on the fortifications on Morris Island during the Civil War and died of dysentery while at Morris Island.  The collection includes:

  • A petition to the state of South Carolina for a slave lost (died) while in public service while working on the fortifications on Morris Island.
  • Affidavit dated Jan. 16th, 1863, for a negro named Tom.  The claim form says Tom’s value was $1000
  • A doctor's letter telling of his condition before leaving for Morris Island. 
  • A letter saying that his value was $800
