London, Published by David Nutt at the Sign of the Phoenix, 1903, Hardcover
First Edition, Very good
8.75" x 7", 158 pp, bound in original black cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Discoloration from old insect predation on front board, internals fine other than some roughly trimmed page edges. Title continues: "with numerous textual examples ranging from Genesis to the Apocalypse, and collected from books of the greatest rarity, for the most part not in the British Museum of any public library in Great Britain. With Introduction, Appendix of Curios, and Bibliography." Begley offers an overview and numerous examples of historical attempts to reveal hidden mysteries in Bible--primarily the New Testament--using cabalistic methods. He approaches these efforts with some skepticism, describing his compilation as "chiefly intentded for lovers and collectors of literary curiosities."
