London, Johnson, Riddle, & Co. [Printers], 1936
Fine
Early edition of Harry Beck's iconic London Underground map, first developed in 1931 and published in 1933. Beck's map "dispensed with conventional geographical accuracy, aiming to enable passengers to understand the network more quickly and simply. It used only horizontal, vertical and 45º lines, and the Underground lines were represented by a set of standard colours. Beck’s idea was initially rejected by the Underground’s publicity department for being too revolutionary" but after some modifications was "produced as a trial pocket map...It was an immediate success with the travelling public, and new pocket editions and posters were soon published" (London Transport Museum).
6" x 8.75", printed on thin cardstock and folded in three panels, as issued. Fine condition.
