New and Enlarged edition.  8vo, pp. viii, 343, 62 (publisher's catalogue of "Charts, Works on Navigation, and Nautical Instruments" dated 1881), complete with 11 maps and chart, in  original brown pebbled cloth with gilt titles. Boards edgeworn, cloth on back board mottled; internals sound and clean, with ownership information on front free endpaper and one page of H[arrison]. J. Dring (191-1989), a former sailor and "walking encyclopedia of the sea" who became "an important figure in maritime preservation, eventually becoming responsible for the fleet of historic ships in the world at the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco" (OAC). A comprehensive, practical work containing "the latest information, to the day of issuing from the press, on all subjects connected with the navigation ofW.H. Ro the South Atlantic," including "full particulars as to the wind and weather, currents and tides of all parts of the South Atlantic; general remarks on the variation of the compass, on deep sea soundings &c., and a list of all the rocks and shoals that have, at various times, been reported; ample instructions respecting the making of passages from port to port, together with directions for approaching and departing from harbours and roadsteads, and on the character of anchorages."
