First edition, inscribed, of this excellent memoir by the 8th Army Commander under General Douglas MacArthur during the battle for the Pacific in World War II. Lt.-Gen. Eichelberger (1886-1961) “fought soldier to soldier with his own men. . . landed with his own first wave at Leyte and nearly outran his own 11th Airborne in its miraculous dash from Manila. He even strafed Jap[anese] defenders from his own B-17 in the Philippines.” Eichelberger had served with the A.E.F. in Siberia, was later superintendent of West Point, and began the Allied occupation of Japan when landing a detachment at Atsugi Air Field following the Japanese surrender.
