Banister Fletcher's 1902 biography remains one of the earliest serious English-language studies of Palladio's life and work, tracing his path from stonemason's apprentice to the most influential architect of the Italian Renaissance, and situating his buildings within the artistic and political currents of sixteenth-century Venice. The volume is generously illustrated with fifty-six plates documenting Palladio's villas, churches, and civic buildings.
