This is the true first hardcover edition, issued by the Del Rey Science Fictiion Book Club in Octover 1976, preceeded by the paperback edition published as a PBO in 1976. It precedes the trade hardcover edition. Meets all issue points including the "S27" letter code in the gutter of page 183 and "2403" at the bottom of the rear dust jacket flap.
Ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster from George Lucas's story and screenplay, this novelization reached readers six months before *Star Wars* premiered in theaters in May 1977, making it the first encounter with the galaxy far, far away in print. Cover artist John Berkey would go on to contribute artwork for further Star Wars projects, including the Atari Return of the Jedi – Death Star Battle video game, tying this early piece of franchise history to its later commercial life.
As the foundational hardcover artifact of the entire Star Wars publishing phenomenon, well-preserved copies like this Near Fine example in a Near Fine jacket are increasingly difficult to source.
