Jesse James the Missouri Outlaw melodrama poster, 27 ½ x 41, plus app 1” linen exposure. Original chromolithograph melodrama play has “Lige and Eliza Making Soldiers "Toes Out".
This poster was probably produced for the W.I. Swain’s Amusement Enterprises. This comic melodrama depicts James as a sympathetic figure, and tells the story of two rival outlaw factions. In addition to James, the characters include William Quantrell, Dick Huntley (the sworn enemy of James and leader of a notorious gang,) Chief Bloody Hand (an Indian outlaw), Edith Forrest (James’s sweetheart), and others. Pictured are the two blackface servants, played by actors Gertie Hasson and H.J. Menkemiller. The man (Lige) is shown holding a rifle and waving, with toes pointed out and guns and knives stuck in his belt; the woman (Liza Green) holds a broom rifle-like and her toes are pointed in; an African-American baby in a red dress sits by a tree-stump in the background. During the early twentieth century, Colonel W.I. Swain’s traveling minstrel show was one of the most successful tent-shows in the South and elsewhere. The present production was described as featuring “the original New York cast.”
