Boudoir photograph, 5 ¼ x 8 ½. “This is a view after they get threw killing the cattel at agency and the lay of the land at the agency on Decota” period pen inscription on back. Very scarce backmark for Baumann & Meddaugh, Rushville, Nebraska.
James E. Meddaugh, sometimes given as James F. Meddaugh or James S. Meddaugh was a photographer based in Rushville, Nebraska and is sometimes listed alongside A. H. Baumann. The studio in Rushville was about 30 miles from Pine Ridge. Meddaugh's Indian images are fairly scarce and he had a short career. The book “The North American Indians in Early Photographs The North American Indians in Early Photographs” give 1888 as the year he was making views of Pine Ridge, but it is known he took one of the few photographs of the Ghost Dance amongst the Lakota in 1890.
Mount exhibits soiling and wear, t/l corner creased, image is fine. Please refer to photographs for condition.
