The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation or Method of Realizing Nirvana Through Knowing the Mind edited by W Y Evans-Wentz. Published by Oxford University Press, London, 1954. First edition. Hardcover w/ DJ. Ex-library (The Library of Universal Truth) with minimal markings and card holder in the back. A first printing of the true first edition of this work in translation - Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz' introductory guide to realizing Nirvana. Evans-Wentz was a distinguished American anthropologist and pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. With nine full-page photographic plates, one in color (the tissue-guarded frontispiece) - all present and undamaged. Also with a three-page preface by the editor, dated 1952. Book I - An Epitome of the Life and Teachings of Tibet's Greatest Guru Padma-Sambhava, Book II - The Yoga of Knowing the Mind, the Seeing of Reality, called Self-liberation, Book III - The Last Testamentary Teachings of the Guru Phadampa Sangay, and an index. Chapter include: "Reality According to the Mahayana, Time and Space, The Nature of Mind, Good and Evil, Tantric Buddhism, Astrology, The Problem of Self," and many others. Green cloth-covered boards; Bright, gilt Dorje emblem w/swastika in center; Color painting of Guru Padma Sambhava opposite title page which is covered w/onion skin page. The boards are clean and tight. The book does have considerable pen underlining. The DJ has edge and corner chipping as well as the spine ends. Now in a Demco protective sleeve. Library card and coupon response international coupon in the holder and old owner name and 1963 date on a ffep. See images.
