Hardcover, cloth over boards. 13" by 5 3/4" 58 ruled pages with handwritten recipes. The binding is in poor shape with the text block almost fully separated from the cover and several loose pages. This book very likely made by, or was given to, Matilda (Tilly) Algar whose name and address in the UK appear in the text towards the end of the book.
Possibly a well to do family with hors d'oeuvres including caviar. Desserts include various cakes (vinegar cake, wedding cake, Madeira cake etc.), cheesecakes, plum pudding and American custard. Savory recipes include haddock soufflé, rabbit jelly, lobster cream, oyster fritters, fish custard (!), lentil cutlet, savory semolina and piquante sauce.
