First Edition, Very Good
Six volumes, bound in five hard cover octavos, of The American Journal of Ophthalmology covering the years from its inception in 1884 to 1889. Pebbled cloth spines over marbled paper boards. The first volume, containing volumes 1 and 2 of the journal, has been professionally rebound retaining the original covers. The original paper wraps of each part are bound in to the back of volumes 3,4,5 and 6.
First six volumes of this foundational American periodical devoted to ophthalmology, established in 1884 as the first journal in the United States exclusively dedicated to diseases of the eye. Published monthly under the editorship of Dr. George C. Harlan and others, The American Journal of Ophthalmology quickly became a critical forum for clinical reports, case studies, surgical techniques, and international correspondence in the developing field of ophthalmic medicine. Contributors during these early volumes included many notable 19th-century figures in American and European ophthalmology. These volumes offer insight into pre-antibiotic treatments, early surgical instrumentation, and evolving theories of ocular pathology.
The American Journal of Ophthalmology is a peer-reviewed, scientific publication that welcomes the submission of original, previously unpublished manuscripts directed to ophthalmologists and visual science specialists describing clinical investigations, clinical observations, and clinically relevant laboratory investigations. Published monthly since 1884. - A.J.O. online
