Amherst MA, Undergraduate at Amherst College, 1898
very good, but fold separations
An 8 page letter on Alpha Delta Phi House stationery, mailed September 26, 1898 from Amherst MA to Corporal Warren D. Brown in Porto Rico, with all the details his classmate thought he might like to hear about the college, the fraternity 'rush', the professors and the curriculum. Mentioned are George Olds who was a professor of mathematics at the college 1891-1927; the gap in the presidency of the college between Merrill Edwards Gates and George Harris; and the death of Bill [William A.] Talcott, born 1871, a fraternity brother who played for the baseball team, and was a cadet at Harvard before volunteering and being shipped to Santiago. He was one of the charge up San Juan Hill, but died of malaria and dysentery soon after arriving home. [some fold separations]
