Item Details

Augusta, Georgia, Bank of Augusta, 1863

fine

1863 a full sheet of obsolete banknotes for Augusta Georgia, in 5, 10, 25, 50 and 75 cent denominations printed on the back of four 4 dollar banknotes from before the war. When part of the Union (probably 1858), Georgia honored Benjamin Franklin and George Washington with engraved vignettes, along with Hercules lifting the globe with a lever - by A., B., & C. Durand Wright & Co. Once the fine rag banknote paper was back printed for nine notes, the Bank of Augusta promised to “pay on demand in Confederate Treasury Notes” the cents noted “when the sum of Five Dollars is presented.”
