Long Island NY, John Hanson, 1770s
folded
[1770s] letter hand carried to Mrs. Browne [Sarah Payne Browne, born 1730] in Flushing NY from John Hanson [of Jamaica, Long Island, not to be confused with the John Hanson of the Continental Congress]. The letter: “Dear Madam, I have had no accounts of Captain Browne since I wrote to you last. I imagine he has been detained for his cargo longer than what he mentioned in his letter to me. I know of no reason you have to make yourself uneasy, did I hear or know of any accident happening to him I should have wrote you about it. Let me beg you to make yourself easy. I assure you I am no way concerned or uneasy as to any accident. Delays are very frequent in that part where he is. As soon as I hear any news shall let you know it, I am your servant, John Hanson” Laid paper, with watermark the ‘Maid of Dort’ of Dutch manufacture 13”x8”. Hanson was given 100 pounds by The New York Provincial Congress of 30 August 1775 for his work towards obstructing the Hudson River.
