Cohoes NY, Frank Soltys, 1945
excellent
1945 two sets of unmounted photographs documenting the USS Basilan - voyages from Okinawa to Jinsen Korea (16 views) and from Shanghai to Seattle (27 views). The two “Stories in Pictures” have typed descriptions (mimeographed). Each of the photographs 2.5”x3.75” is hand stamped on the back with a number and identification of voyage. Photographer Frank Soltys, 23 Willow St., Cohoes, NY. The ship was built in February 1944 in New Orleans and was delivered to the Navy in April. She was converted first to barracks-stores-distilling and then to electronic repair and staff maintenance. From a base in the Philippines she worked with other repair ships. After war’s end she was earmarked for disposal but remained on occupation duty - first at Jinsen and then at Shanghai, returning to Seattle on 6 January 1946. Good documentation of the ship’s exterior and interior, and casual views of shipboard life.
