Philadelphia, Joseph Skerrett, 1831`, Cloth
First edition, Very good.
First edition. First separate edition, "extracted from the American Journal of the Medical Sciences, for November, 1831." Bound without wrappers (if ever present) in a modern buckram binding lettered down the spine. Small 8vo, 32 pp. Pioneering statistical demographic work, one of the first of its kind in the United States. Bills of mortality were broken down by months and causes of death for men and women. Of particular interest is that data for Whites and Blacks are tabulated side by side. Very good condition, printed on rag paper, semicircular water stain at base of pages. Pencil gift inscription on title page "The Rev. Dr. Tuckerman from his friend J. T. Barclay." Joseph Tuckerman was a Unitarian clergyman and social reformer active in Boston; James T. Barclay was an M.D. who at one time owned Monticello, using the estate for agricultural experimentation. He became in later life a medical missionary in Ottoman Palestine.
