Paris, Paul Kliensieck, 1900, Wrappers
Wrappers. 8 pp., 6 pl. With a splendid wraparound design by Gallé, printed by the Atelier A. Barbier & F. Paulin, Nancy. Accompanied by a second offprint, also by Gallé , in printed wrappers. The second offprint has an inscription on the title page "A ma bonne tante . . . ton Mile," with a slanting line toward Gallé's name. This inscription would appear by context and logic to be by him, but we have been told this is not the case. Therefore we do not represent this as inscribed by him. The brochure with cover design by Gallé is a perfect fusion of his art nouveau sensibility, tapping into the beauty of nature, and his understanding of botanical science. Laid into the second offprint is a small photograph of ferns, identified by their scientific name on the back. The handwriting there is in "reverse italics" to compensate for the natural slant of handwriting; it does not resemble the handwriting of the inscription.
