New York, Typographical Union No. 6, 1911, Cloth
First (only) edition, Good
Purple cloth. Narrow 4to, unpaginated, 24 pp. Ex-library. Letter of presentation on the stationery of the New York Typographical Union No. 6, known colloquially as the “Big Six,” from S. W. Gamble, Manager of the celebration, to the Librarian of the New York Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen. Shelf mark in white ink on narrow spine and accession numbers within, stamps in several places of the Society's Slade Architectural Library. Period portrait of Horace Greeley from the time that he was President of Typographical Union, reproduction of his membership card, and a portrait of him in later life.; Greeley was certainly unusual for the period for being not only a labor union member, but the president of one. Later, of course, he became a newspaper publisher and unsuccessful candidate for the US presidency. Two-page introduction on the formation of Typographical Union No. 6, program of the celebration, addresses, and texts of letters received, including a very charming one by William Dean Howells. The volume is held by a dozen libraries, but is very scarce in commerce. In its day “Bix Six” was a real power in the newspaper and printing industries and a counterbalance to that of the newspaper barons.
