Taormina, Sicily, Italy, F. Galli-Crupi, 1910 (ca.), Postcards

Good

Five real-photo postcards published by the firm of F. Galli-Crupi, who documented the people and scenery of Taormina, Sicily. Ca. 1910. Francesco Gallifi-Crupi took over the business of his brother-in-law Giovanni Crupi when the latter set up as a photographer in Egypt. (See also our item relating to Egypt in the same period). Giovanni Crupi and Wilhelm von Gloeden were collaborators, and the continuing influence of von Gloeden, known for his ephebic portraits of beautiful young boys, is clear in the two photographs of male youths. The subjects of the portraits have a classical feel that harks back to the Greek roots of Taormina. All the cards have minor damage to the lower edge, not affecting the images. One of the portraits of young women has a pencil title that is not quite legible.
