Paris (place where done), Drawing, 1923-1924
Very good
Accomplished and fluid pencil sketch of a nude woman by Jo Davidson (1883-1952). Inscribed to opera singer Grace Moore (1898-1947). The drawing is signed and dated "Paris / 1923." The gift inscription runs "with best of wishes / NY / 1924." In 1923 Davidson executed a sculpture of Gertrude Stein while in Paris. In 1924 Moore was at the start of a very successful career as a stage and opera singer. As they met in Paris It is not beyond probabillty that she herself is the one who posed for the drawing. Pencil on drawing pad paper, deacidified, margins trimmed with no loss to drawing or inscription and mounted on better paper. Provenance: Estate of Ruth Gordon, restoration subsequent to sale of her estate.
