None (photo albums), 1930, Album
Two physically identical photo albums, cord-bound with pseudo-Oriental lettering on covers and maker's label of Album Artista, Paris on inside rear cover. Dimensions of albums ca. 23 X 15 cm. 24 photos in each. The photographs record events occurring around the Algerian Centennial of 1930 and a journey on a vehicle of the "Auto-Circuits Nord Africains." They show the reception of Gaston Doumerge, the President of France at the time, with Arab dignitaries, French officials, and the like, and secondly, landscapes, people and encounters of the passengers with the life of the interior, including camel caravans. At some point the bus turned over on its side; this was noteworthy enough to be documented more than once. Auto tourism followed the construction of a road network in North Africa and helped cement French colonial ambitions. Provenance: Archives of Paris photography publisher Paul Montel.
